Pastor Patti’s Ponderings… Could we be named St. Paul because??
This month, I would like to share with you some musings I had while I was away on Sabbatical. The guiding question for pastor and church was: “Why are we called St. Paul?” What can the apostle Paul teach us about our mission as Christ’s church today?
Could we be named St. after Paul because we are brave enough to face the hardships and not walk away?
Could it be because we are brave enough to say the hard things that can bring us to life, even when it is not popular and might not be understood?
Could it be because, when we see a need, instead of saying, “Someone else will go, someone else will help, someone else will take care of it”—we step up and tell God, “Here I am, send me.”
Could it be because we can see the long view, and patiently await the change that happens, so slowly, without losing heart and without giving up?
Could it be because we choose to be the (sometimes lone) voice of welcome to people that others see as outside the realm of God’s grace, outside the arms of mercy, outside the circle of God’s loving care?
Could it be because we are learning to give voice to the faith that so deeply resides within us, and because we, with Paul, experience the sharing of our faith as life-giving, light-bearing, and powerful to recharge our faith, hope, love, and resolve?
Why do you think we might be called St. Paul?
