Pastor Patti’s Ponderings… Snow, Sun, and Savior
Wow! What a winter it has been in Michigan this year. I think we may have set records for snowfall, temperature swings, and, thankfully, for sunshine! For me personally, I think the sunshine has been one of the best surprises of this very long, snowy, damp and cold winter. In the words of John Denver: “Sunshine on my shoulders makes me happy. Sunshine in my eyes can make me cry. Sunshine on the water looks so lovely. Sunshine almost always makes me high.” (I may be dating myself here…)
The apostle Paul saw everything with new eyes after he was struck blind on the road to Damascus. The Son-shine of Christ blinded him, and the encounter with the Risen Lord completely turned his life around. The light of the world is Jesus… Shine, Jesus, Shine… Climb up Son-shine Mountain… Show me the way… so many hymns in the Christian tradition refer to light and sunshine, with power to bless us and guide us.
This Lenten season, I would like to invite you on a journey with me—to see the death and resurrection of Christ through the eyes of the apostle Paul. Each Sunday morning during 10am worship, we will visit a different place where the teachings of Paul shaped the Christian church—Rome, Ephesus, Corinth, Phillipi and Thessaloniki, Athens and Jerusalem. We will see slides to give us a sense of the spiritual geography of the apostle Paul’s influence. I wonder how one man could make such an impact on the world that his presence is keenly felt 2,000 years later? How will this man inspire us, people of St. Paul UCC? I wonder what difference our lives and ministries will make for future generations?
